Tips For Selecting The Right Gym

Posted on

These days, you can drive down a busy street and practically count the gyms. There's often one on every corner, and you truly can have your pick. So how do you know which one of these many gyms is right for you? Here are a few things to consider as you make your decision.

1. Look at the class list

If you enjoy participating in classes at the gym, compare the class lists at a few different gyms before making your choice. Make sure they offer classes you will actually enjoy and benefit from. For example, if you are really fond of spin classes but a particular gym only offers spin once a week at a time you're unavailable, then you can cross that gym off your list.

2. Consider whether you'll use any extras

Most gyms offer something a little extra to set themselves apart from the competition. Some gyms may have tanning beds. Others might have a nice daycare. Still others might have a smoothie bar. Consider whether you will use each gym's extras, and try to sign up at a gym where you will.

3. Check for a pool if you like to swim

If you are someone who enjoys swimming or hopes to make either swimming or water aerobics a part of your workout routine, then you can pretty easily narrow down your selection of gyms to those with pools. If there is more than one gym in your town with a pool, then visit each one and compare them. Is the pool overly busy? Are there proper lanes, or do people seem to be swimming all over the place? You want a membership at a gym that has a pool you feel confident and comfortable using.

4. Consider your budget

When you start looking at gym membership fees, prepare to be surprised at how much they vary. You may only pay $20 a month for a membership at a basic gym with some weights and cardio equipment, or you might pay $100 a month for a gym with a tanning booth and a pool. Try to decide on a budget ahead of time, and then only look at gyms within that budget so you are not tempted to over-spend.

Selecting the right gym is not always easy. If you visit a few and keep the tips above in mind, however, you should be able to settle on one that's a good fit.
